FOOTBALL (12-4-10) – Olathe 14 Brush 13

Kyle Piatt ran for 193 yards and gave Olathe the lead for good on a 53 yard touchdown run in the 3rd quarter to so along with Miguel Ramirez’s extra point as Olathe defeated Brush for the 2A state championship from Legacy Stadium in Aurora.

Following a bad snap in the punting game, the Beetdiggers capitalized on their first possession with Conner Weisser scoring from 3 yards out for a 7-0 lead as Jesus Cardenas botted the extra point. Olathe countered in the 2nd quarter on an 11 play, 72 yard drive that consumed over 5 minutes with Willy Corey’s 2 yard run and Miguel Ramirez’s extra point deadlocking the game at 7. With 36 seconds to go before halftime, Shay Hansen blocked a Cody Harrison punt with the ball rolling out of bounds at the Olathe. Weisser scored his 2nd TD from 1 yard out with 6 seconds remaining but Cardenas’ extra point deflected off the left upright as Brush’s lead was 13-7 at halftime.

On Brush’s 1st possession of the 3rd quarter, Skyler Seewald was stopped on a 4th and 1 from the Olathe 45 yard line. Two plays later, Piatt motored up the left sideline for a 53 yard TD and with Ramirez’s PAT, Olathe led 14-13.

After stopping Olathe with just over 4 and a half minutes to go on an 18 play, 90 yard drive which ended at the Brush 2 yard line, Brush gained 51 yards on 3 running plays getting them to the Olathe 46 yard line. Brush QB Eric Garcia, who threw 3 interceptions in the game, was picked off by Kyle Piatt, who returned it to the Brush 48 yard line. The Beetdiggers eventually held Olathe at the 15 yard line, but 2 plays later, Garcia was picked off by Zach Cosper as Olathe won their 2nd title in 3 seasons while the Beetdiggers fell to 4-7 all-time in state championship games.

Kent Denver extended the lead to 25-14 when Collins Gantz returned the 2nd half kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown, but in the waning moments of the 3rd quarter, Seewald scored from 6 yards away shortly after Kyle Hefner recovered a Yates fumble. Seewald also ran in the 2 point conversion cutting the Kent Denver lead to 25-22. After Brush stopped Kent Denver on the next possession, the Beetdiggers took over at the 20 yard line with 8:17 remaining and called their final timeout with 6 seconds to go and the ball on the Sun Devils 2 yard line. Weisser then proceeded to run the football around the left side and dive into the end zone for the dramatic victory.
